A Surrey Hills day trip from London

An hour out of Waterloo, you can be standing above Silent Pool with a cup of masala chai.

The Surrey Hills is the closest proper countryside to London — a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that begins about an hour from the centre of town. Trains from Waterloo to Guildford take 35–55 minutes. From there, a 15-minute taxi drops you at Silent Pool, where the chalk hills rise and the spring water lies so still it looks like glass. Just above the pool, in a 400-year-old converted cowshed, is Mandira's Kitchen: chai, lunch, afternoon tea, and a view that empties your head.

It is the day out Londoners keep meaning to take and then take twice in a month once they finally do.

How the day works

1

Train from London Waterloo to Guildford

Direct services run every 15 minutes, journey time 35–55 minutes. Off-peak returns are inexpensive.

2

Taxi or short drive to Silent Pool, Albury

About 15 minutes from Guildford station, or just over an hour from central London via the A3 if driving.

3

Walk Silent Pool and the North Downs Way

A short, flat loop around the pool, or longer trails up to Newlands Corner and St Martha's Hill.

4

Chai or Afternoon Tea at Mandira's Kitchen

Scones with bhel puri, chilli cheese scones, Bengali sweets, and proper masala chai in the barn.

5

Take a stack of freezer meals home

The shop by the cafe sells handmade Indian meals, chutneys and spice kits — perfect for the train back.

Where to eat

The barn above Silent Pool

Mandira's Kitchen is a 400-year-old barn cafe and Indian restaurant on the Albury Estate. Open seven days a week. Chai and snacks all day, full Indian thalis at lunch, afternoon tea on the patio when the sun is out and by the wood-burner when it isn't. Endorsed by Nigella Lawson, 11 Great Taste Awards, and the only place we know of where a Sunday roast might come with a side of dal.

Booking is sensible at weekends — the barn is small by design.
