Birdsong, hills, water, and a barn that smells of cardamom by mid-morning.
Some afternoon teas happen in hotel lounges. Ours comes with a view. We are at Silent Pool in the Surrey Hills, with seating inside the 400-year-old barn and out on the patio overlooking the water.
In summer the patio is the place to be; in colder months the barn is warm and smells of frying samosas. Either way it feels like a day out rather than a booking slot.
Inside the Surrey Hills National Landscape
The barn sits on the old pilgrims’ track on the Albury Estate, between the gin distillery and the vineyard, with the North Downs rising behind. Cardamom drifts across the hills most mornings. It is an easy add-on to a walk, a cookery class or a lazy Sunday, and the dog is welcome on the patio.
