Every place that quiet ends up with a story attached. Silent Pool has one of England's better ones, and we are about two minutes above it.
The pool is spring-fed, clear to the bottom, and so still it unsettles people. The story goes that a woodcutter's daughter, Emma, was bathing here when a nobleman on horseback rode in after her. She backed into deeper water to get away from him and drowned. Her brother, hearing her, dived in and drowned too. The nobleman left a feather behind, caught in a tree. By the Victorian retelling, the nobleman was Prince John, later King John, the one the Magna Carta was written to restrain.
Historians will tell you the King John version was largely invented by Martin Tupper in an 1858 novel, written to make Albury, where he lived, feel like "classic ground." Possibly so. People still lower their voices when they tell it. Tennyson came here to sit. Agatha Christie's car was found just up the hill at Newlands Corner in 1926, which only added to the place's reputation for swallowing people quietly.
Mandira's Kitchen sits on the track just above all of it, in a 400-year-old converted cowshed. You can walk down, look at the pool, decide for yourself whether it feels haunted, and come back up for chai. Most people do exactly that.

Lunch, seven days a week
Lunch is Indian street food, the kind Mandira grew up eating, not a curry-house menu. Samosa chaat with tamarind drizzle, papri chaat, biryani, kathi rolls, keema pav, the forbidden chilli cheese toast, all handmade with our own chutneys. Gluten-free options. Eat in the barn or out on the patio over the pool.
The weekend thali
At weekends we make a limited number of thalis: a round platter of small dishes that changes every week, with a Bollywood playlist, a film recommendation and a quiz. Must be pre-booked. Also available by post on the monthly subscription.
Freezer meals to take home
The same food, cooked by hand in small batches in the barn and frozen the same day. Take a stack home from the cafe after lunch, or have them delivered anywhere in the UK, free over £100.
A barn above one of England's strangest pools
Silent Pool is a spring-fed former chalk quarry on the Albury Estate, so still and so clear it looks lit from below. Tennyson came here to think. Agatha Christie's car was found just up the hill at Newlands Corner in 1926. There is a legend about a girl called Emma and a king on a horse, which may be Victorian invention but is told anyway, usually in a lowered voice. Our barn sits on the track just above all of it, where the smell of ground cardamom now drifts across the hills by mid-morning.
